This year’s Great Northern A-V Weekend was held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1st, 2nd, & 3rd December at the usual venue - Wilmslow Guild Centre for Adult Education, (about 4 miles from Manchester Airport.)    All the usual suspects were due to be present – an introductory spectacular on Friday evening, a National A-V Competition - one of the few open to slide-tape as well as digital sequences – presentations and advice from A-V experts, bring and buy second hand equipment table, tea, coffee etc included in admission price, excellent food, friendly atmosphere and an opportunity to chat to old and new friends which is an excellent way to pick up even more hints and tips.

(See below for the results)

Friday 1st December, 7.30pm
TITANIC – THE RETURN OF A DREAM with Andy Lound

The most famous ocean liner in history must be the Titanic.   Her story from conception in 1907 to her rediscovery in 1985 was told in dramatic fashion by Andy Lound, fully clad in White Star uniform.
The presentation was illustrated by slides, audio and other effects, music and props, making a dramatic and emotional performance.  Titanic like you never heard it before.   We had the voyage of our life!

Saturday 2nd December, all day, starting at 10.00am
Great Northern Festival
.

A National A-V competition open to anybody resident in the British Isles and to overseas members of British A-V Groups.   Slide-tape and digital sequences will compete together.  There is a special prize for the best beginner’s sequence, so everyone is in with a chance.  This is an excellent opportunity to see both National/International standard A-V, and what can be achieved by relative newcomers, all in one competition.  Download Entry Form

The Chairman of the Jury for this year’s Festival was: Brian Jeffs FRPS DPAGB

Brian started AV over 30 years ago after being introduced to it at his camera club in Leicester.  He gained his LRPS in 1983, his ARPS in 1986, and his Fellowship in 1993.  He is a founder member of Leicester Forest AV Group and has served as their Secretary & Treasurer.  He was elected to the AV Group committee in 1994, and has served as Publicity, Treasurer and  is currently the Chairman.  Brian is also involved in the organising committees of both the International  and National AV Championships, as well as being the East Midlands Regional AV Organiser.   He is a member of the RPS AV Distinctions panel. It is not surprising that he was awarded the Dobson Henry Medal for outstanding contributions to AV in 2002.  Most of Brian’s AV sequences result from his other hobby of walking.  He has visited many parts of the world and we have shared in his experiences through the AVs.  My favourite it “Childhood Memories” of India.

The other jury members were:    Marion Waine  ARPS DPAGB AV-AFIAP

Like most AV workers, Marion began as a photographer.  She was active in club photography in Essex and Hertfordshire before she moved to Cheshire in the early 90s when she joined Mid Cheshire CC.  She moved on to AV and joined Wilmslow Guild AV Group when it was formed in 1993. One of her sequences was the first shown at the Group.  Since then she has moved forward considerably!  She is still a member of WGAVG, and has served on the committee.  She is now a member of Bebington PS and is on the Executive Committee of L&CPU.  Many of Marion’s sequences are made to express her feelings, and include “Roots” and “Hug a Tree.”  She has also worked on many co-productions, particularly with Ron Davies. The most recent of these is “Y Bugail Tal-y-Braich” with Ron & John Rowell.  Many of these sequences have received awards both here and abroad. Last year, Marion was honoured to be one of the judges at the National AV Championships.

and                                                      Keith Scott  ARPS DPAGB

Image making is second nature to Keith due to photographic involvement dating back to late 1950’s early 1960’s where he helped in a commercial studio learning the skills of lighting, exposure, composition and processing. He was introduced to AV around 1974 by commercial involvement. He says he has to work hard at scriptwriting and soundtrack production and consequentially listens intently to everyone’s sound tracks. Keith is current Vice Chairman of the RPS AV Group and past president of the Leeds & District AV Group.  His AV interests are varied and open minded, but he is perhaps best remembered for his humour.  I well remember “Flat Cap-n-Ferret Country” and “In Loving Memory.”   He appreciates all aspects of the medium and enjoys looking at and listening to other’s work. He has had various successes in County, National, and International competitions with his best achievement at International level being Gold Medallist, “where the Eastern Bloc judges obviously had my sequence mixed up with that of someone else!!!”  He is thrilled to be working alongside Brian and Marion both of whom he knows well.

Sunday 3rd December, all day, starting at 10.00am
RPS NW AV Day.

The RPS AV Day on Sunday will be all about learning and entertaining.  The overall theme for the day will be "What makes an AV sequence an AV?".  Our guest speakers will be the Great Northern Competition judges; Brian Jeffs FRPS DPAGB, Marion Waine ARPS DPAGB av-AFIAP and Keith Scott ARPS DPAGB.  Each in their own way will ensure that you learn something new about the art of AV which will help you in producing your own sequences.  If you haven’t started to produce sequences yet, they will inspire you to begin.  At the same time you’ll be able to enjoy watching top quality AV.
The proceedings will start at 10am with Attenders' Sequences and comments from our guest speakers and other members of the audience.  This is an invaluable way to obtain advice on how to improve your work but there will also be room for authors who want to entertain us without receiving feedback.  We aim to finish around 5pm to give visitors from outside the North West time to travel home.

The RPS AV Day rounds off a full, integrated weekend of Audio Visual at Wilmslow.

Information packs will be sent out next Autumn to all previous attendees, and anyone else whom we think might be interested.   If you don’t receive yours, if you wish to be added to our mailing list, (or be deleted from our mailing list!) or need any other information, just give us a ring.
